Painted by Picasso when he was 50 years old, it portrays his 24-year-old mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter.

In 1940 Picasso visited the the 17,000 year-old cave paintings in the Grotte de Lascaux, France’s most famous prehistoric cave paintings. He was so taken with the detail, beauty and sensitive rendering of the paintings, it is said that he declared “We have learned nothing in twelve thousand years.”
