Why WordPress?
I love building websites with WordPress. A few months ago I wrote a post listing some of my reasons for choosing WordPress content management systems. You can read it here.
Right out of the box, WordPress themes are professionally designed (some are downright beautiful!), mobile friendly (Google gives you extra points for mobile friendly websites), poised for search engine optimization, and easy to learn. There is a repository of plugins that you can add to your site for extra features.
Big business loves WordPress too
While WordPress is perfect for small business owners, big business also recognizes the value in using the software, and the ease with which their users can write blog posts, add and edit images, drop in videos, create new pages, and much more.
Although you may be surprised by who uses WordPress, you will be even more surprised to learn that they are using the software very much in the same way you are using it for your website, but on a bigger scale.
Basically a news site — very clean and organized. The New Yorker uses blog posts on almost all of its pages. This is done by adding post filters to the different pages that pull only the post category that is needed for that particular page or section.
The New Yorker also has the SEO Yoast plugin installed on their site. SEO Yoast plugin helps site owners improve search engine optimization on their posts and pages. I install this plugin on every site I build.

Although highly customized, Time Inc. uses many of the same features that small business add to their sites: video, search field, downloadable pdfs, and email subscription option.
Email optin is an excellent method of collecting visitor email addresses. The list is a great way of keeping visitors up-to-date on news, offers, schedules, etc.

The first thing you see front and center when you visit the Mavs site is the Optin Pop-up. You will also see a slide show plugin with fabulous artwork.
They use the Jetpack plugin, which comes with every WordPress install. Look at your WordPress Dashboard — you will see it there. They have a photo gallery, a news blog, and links to social media. Nothing here that we have not seen on a small business website!
